I was User of the Day for December 9

Posted by hotdogtopus - December 10th, 2017

So, I got a PM saying that I was user of the day for 12/9. I don't think it did anything, but okay!

Yup, you were! You were up on the Community page. Probably would be fun to try featuring UOTD on the front page, too.

Thanks, Tom. I did see it, but I'm not sure whether anyone clicked on my profile pic.

BTW, we really need a Patreon style service for NG -- SOMETHING. Patrons are dropping like flies after the $1 change thing. There's nowhere to go. I'm assuming you've seen your Twitter.

I'm hoping we'll launch something similar to Ko-Fi in 2018, but with leaderboards and perks integrated into NG. We actually had Paypal donate buttons in the early years of the Portal but no one used them so we eventually pulled it.

Now feels like a good time to revisit it but with the added ability to log the transactions while not actually handling the money. Not handling the money means NG doesn't take a cut but also doesn't deal with all the IRS implications of being a money handler.

That's the big thing for me... I feel uncomfortable being the middle man in peer to peer payments. What Patreon does is essentially the same thing Paypal does - allow one person to send money to another person - but Paypal has jumped through a TON of hoops on the legal and regulatory side and I'm not sure if sites like Patreon are gonna find themselves in a mess with the IRS some day.

The more I've delved into international tax law and how it keeps changing (efforts to prevent off-shoring / money laundering), the less I want to be involved in it. If we ever did something that involved processing subscriptions, it would probably start as US-only the way Kickstarter did.
